Vattenförbrukning refers to the total amount of fresh water used by humans. This includes water withdrawn from rivers, lakes, and groundwater for various purposes, as well as water evaporated from reservoirs. Global water consumption has increased significantly over the past century, driven by population growth, agricultural expansion, and industrial development. Agriculture is the largest consumer of freshwater, accounting for approximately 70% of global withdrawals, primarily for irrigation. Industry and energy production account for another significant portion, used for cooling and manufacturing processes. Domestic water use, including drinking, sanitation, and household activities, represents a smaller but essential part of overall consumption.
Water consumption varies greatly by region and economic development. Industrialized nations often have higher per capita
