Vastukaalud

Vastukaalud refers to a traditional type of wooden boat originating from the Seto region in Eastern Estonia. The name "Vastukaalud" roughly translates to " fast sailing boats" in Estonian, which reflects their design and construction focused on agility and speed.

Vastukaalud were typically used in the coastal regions of Estonia for fishing and transportation purposes. The boats were crafted from local forest trees, often spruce or fir, and were characterized by their sleek and streamlined design. They had a distinctive notch-shaped stern, a narrow keel, and a single mast that was stepped at the bow.

Their design allowed the boat to glide over the water with minimal resistance, making it well-suited for navigating through the shallow waters and winding coastlines of the region. The Vastukaalud were often propelled using a single sail, which was made from local linen or canvas.

Over time, the construction of Vastukaalud has largely been replaced by more modern designs and materials. However, a small number of these traditional boats can still be found in the museum and heritage collections of the region, serving as a reminder of the maritime heritage and traditional craftsmanship of the Seto people.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in preserving and reviving the traditional craftsmanship associated with the Vastukaalud.
