Vastasyntynyt is a Finnish term used to describe a baby who has recently been born. In everyday language it refers to an infant in the early postnatal period, and in medical contexts it denotes the neonatal phase, commonly defined as the first 28 days after birth. The word is used both as an adjective and, less commonly, as a noun.

In clinical settings, the vastasyntynyt period involves initial newborn assessments and routine care. Typical practices include measuring weight, length, and head circumference, evaluating reflexes, and monitoring vital signs. The Apgar score, assessed at one and five minutes after birth, remains a conventional quick check of the newborn’s condition. Many health systems also conduct newborn screening tests to detect certain genetic or metabolic conditions, as well as routine checks for jaundice and feeding adequacy. The concept also encompasses early bonding and feeding support, with emphasis on breastfeeding or appropriate formula feeding and on safe, supportive environments.

Care and development during the vastasyntynyt stage focus on basic needs and safety. Common considerations include establishing regular feeding, recognizing hunger cues, ensuring skin-to-skin contact, and promoting safe sleep positions to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Parents and caregivers are advised to monitor for warning signs such as persistent poor feeding, breathing difficulties, or lethargy and to seek medical evaluation if concerns arise.

Etymology: vastasyntynyt is formed from vasta- or vistoil as a prefix meaning “recently” together with syntynyt, the past participle of syntyä, “to be born.” This compounds to mean “newly born.”
