Varðavegar

Varðavegar is a term originating from Icelandic culture, literally translating to "watch paths" or "guard paths." Historically, these paths were established for a specific practical purpose: to facilitate communication and vigilance across the landscape, particularly in rural and remote areas.

The primary function of varðavegar was to enable the rapid relay of messages or warnings. When a threat, such as approaching strangers, livestock in distress, or natural hazards, was identified, individuals stationed at strategic points along these paths would light signal fires or use other prearranged methods to alert the next watch point.
