Varustelleet

Varustelleet is a Finnish verb form derived from varustella, meaning to equip or outfit. It is the perfect active participle (perfekti-partisiippi) of a verb in the -ella class, formed on the stem varustell- with the participle suffix -eet. The form is used with the auxiliary olla to express the present perfect in third-person plural: Hallitukset ovat varustelleet joukot, meaning the governments have equipped the troops.

In ordinary usage, varustelleet primarily functions as part of a periphrastic perfect construction rather than as a standalone finite form. Its main role is to indicate completed action by a plural subject in a sentence. For example, in the sentence Hallitukset ovat varustelleet joukot, the meaning is explicit: the governments have equipped the troops. As a non-finite or adjectival form, Finnish more commonly employs varustellut to describe entities that have already been equipped (for example, varustellut aseet “equipped weapons”). Thus varustelleet is best understood as the participial form that appears in perfect constructions, rather than as a general-purpose attributive form.
