Varslingssystemet

Varslingssystemet is a coordinated framework used by Swedish authorities to warn and inform the public about dangerous situations and ongoing emergencies. It is designed to provide timely, clear guidance during incidents such as severe weather, industrial accidents, or security threats, and to reach people across national and local levels.

The system is primarily coordinated by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (Myndigheten för samhällsskydd och beredskap, MSB) in cooperation with other government agencies, municipalities, and regional emergency services. It utilizes multiple channels to maximize reach and reliability, including traditional methods such as public sirens and radio/TV interruptions, and digital channels such as SMS alerts, push notifications on mobile apps, official websites, and social media. In workplaces, schools, and other organizations, internal alert procedures can complement public messages.

Alerts are issued after threat assessment and are tailored to the affected area and risk level. Messages typically provide concrete instructions for protective actions, such as evacuation, sheltering in place, or following issued guidance. The system can support regional and national alerts and may be updated as situations develop or are resolved.

Public participation and resilience are central to the varslingssystemet: citizens are encouraged to subscribe to relevant alerts, keep contact information up to date, and follow authorities’ guidance.
