Varselperiod

Varselperiod refers to the notice period that must be observed when terminating an employment contract or a lease agreement. In employment law, it is the time between the employee giving notice of resignation or the employer giving notice of dismissal, and the actual last day of employment. The length of the varselperiod is often specified in the employment contract, collective bargaining agreement, or by statutory law, and typically varies depending on the employee's length of service.

For example, in Sweden, the employer's notice period is generally at least one month and increases with the employee's tenure, up to six months for those employed for ten years or more. Employees also have a notice period, commonly one month, unless otherwise agreed. During the varselperiod, the employee is usually expected to continue working, and the employer is obligated to pay salary and provide other benefits.

Similarly, in rental agreements, a varselperiod dictates how much advance notice a tenant or landlord must give before terminating the lease. The specific duration is usually outlined in the lease agreement or mandated by local regulations. Adhering to the varselperiod is crucial to avoid potential legal disputes or financial penalties for breach of contract.
