Varottitte

Varottitte is a genus of extinct marine reptiles belonging to the order Plesiosauria. These creatures lived during the Late Jurassic period, approximately 150 million years ago. Fossil discoveries indicate that varottitte inhabited the oceans of what is now known as Europe.

The most distinctive feature of varottitte, like other plesiosaurs, was its long neck. This anatomical characteristic likely aided them in hunting prey beneath the water's surface. Their bodies were broad and flat, supported by four large flippers that provided propulsion through the water. The exact size of varottitte species varies, but some could reach lengths of several meters.

The diet of varottitte is believed to have consisted primarily of fish and squid, based on the analysis of fossilized stomach contents and dental morphology. Their sharp teeth were well-suited for grasping slippery prey. As marine predators, they occupied an important ecological niche in their ancient ocean environment.

The classification of varottitte within Plesiosauria places it among the pliosauroids or potentially a closely related group. While many plesiosaur fossils have been found, varottitte remains less extensively studied than some other well-known genera.
