Varnarmála is a traditional craft describing the practice of painting with varnish to create decorative and protective finishes on wood, metal, and other surfaces. The term appears in several Nordic and Baltic language traditions and is associated with both functional coating and aesthetic enhancement, often yielding translucent or lacquer-like appearances.

Historically, varnarmála developed alongside furniture making, interior decoration, and ship fittings, where durable finishes were essential. Practitioners sought finishes that could resist wear while offering color and depth. Techniques varied by region but commonly involved careful surface preparation, multiple thin coats of varnish, and polishing or burnishing to achieve desired gloss and smoothness.
