Varietetens

Varietetens is the genitive form of the Swedish noun varietet, meaning the variety or the variety’s. In biology and horticulture, a variety (varietas; abbreviated var.) is an infraspecific taxon representing a population within a species that exhibits distinct, heritable traits. Varieties can arise naturally through geographic variation or adaptation, or they can result from human selection in cultivation. They are used to describe stable differences that recur across generations and are recognized in botanical nomenclature.

Botanical ranks below species also include forma (f.) and, in some classifications, subspecies (subsp.). Varieties are typically distinguished by minor but consistent morphological differences rather than large geographic separation. The differences are expected to be stable and heritable, though not every population with a trait qualifies as a named variety. In many modern contexts, cultivar names (cult.) are applied to cultivated selections and may be used alongside or instead of botanical infraspecific ranks, especially in horticulture and seed commerce.

In Swedish-language texts, varietetens functions as the possessive form, as in “varietetens egenskaper” (the variety’s characteristics). The broader concept of variety remains relevant in species descriptions, seed catalogs, and taxonomic discussions, reflecting both natural diversity and human influence on plant populations. While some taxonomic frameworks emphasize subspecies or cultivars, the rank of variety (varietas) persists in botanical tradition as a way to categorize populations within a species that share stable, discernible traits.
