Varhaisultraäänitutkimus, often referred to as early ultrasound, is a medical imaging procedure performed during the initial stages of pregnancy. Typically conducted between the 6th and 10th week of gestation, its primary purpose is to confirm the presence and viability of a pregnancy. This non-invasive examination uses sound waves to create images of the developing fetus and uterus.

The key objectives of an early ultrasound include determining the gestational age of the pregnancy, which helps in estimating the expected due date. It also allows for the visualization of the fetal heartbeat, confirming that the pregnancy is progressing as expected and is not an ectopic pregnancy. Furthermore, the scan can identify the number of fetuses, ruling out or confirming a multiple pregnancy. In some cases, it can also detect early signs of potential complications.

The procedure itself is straightforward and painless. The pregnant individual lies down, and a transducer, coated with a gel, is moved across the abdomen. In some instances, especially in early pregnancy, a transvaginal ultrasound may be performed, where a smaller transducer is gently inserted into the vagina for a clearer view. The images generated provide valuable information for both the expectant parents and the healthcare provider, offering reassurance and facilitating timely medical care.
