Vapaavalumisjärjestelmä, often translated as gravity flow system or free-flow system, refers to a plumbing or drainage system where wastewater or other liquids move through pipes primarily under the influence of gravity. This design relies on a gradual downward slope of the pipes to ensure continuous flow without the need for mechanical pumps.

The principle behind a vapaavalumisjärjestelmä is to utilize natural gravitational force. Pipes are installed with a specific pitch or gradient, typically measured in centimeters per meter or inches per foot. This slope ensures that liquids flow from a higher elevation to a lower one, eventually reaching their destination, such as a sewer main or a septic tank. The steeper the slope, the faster the flow, but excessive steepness can lead to separation of solids and liquids, a phenomenon known as scouring.
