Valuuttapaar, also known as a currency pair, is a term used in foreign exchange (forex) trading to describe the relative value between two different currencies. It indicates how much of one currency (the quote currency) is needed to purchase one unit of another currency (the base currency). Currency pairs are fundamental to forex trading, allowing traders to speculate on the fluctuations in exchange rates between different currencies.

A typical currency pair is expressed in a format such as EUR/USD, where EUR is the base currency and USD is the quote currency. The price of the pair reflects the amount of the quote currency required to buy one unit of the base currency. For example, if EUR/USD is quoted at 1.2000, it means 1 euro can be exchanged for 1.20 US dollars.

Currency pairs are categorized into three main types: major pairs, minors, and exotic pairs. Major pairs involve the most traded currencies globally, such as the US dollar, euro, Japanese yen, British pound, Swiss franc, Canadian dollar, and Australian dollar. Minor pairs do not include the US dollar but involve other major currencies. Exotic pairs combine a major currency with a currency from an emerging or smaller economy.

The forex market operates 24 hours a day, five days a week, facilitating continuous trading of currency pairs. Fluctuations in currency values are driven by economic data, geopolitical events, interest rates, and market speculation. Understanding currency pairs is essential for traders and investors engaged in international finance, as they form the basis for hedging, speculation, and international transactions.
