Valuuttakurssijärjestelmät, or currency exchange systems, refer to the methods by which countries determine the value of their national currency relative to other currencies. These systems are fundamental to international trade, investment, and monetary policy. Historically, various regimes have been employed by governments and central banks to stabilize economies, manage inflation, and influence external balances.

The primary classifications of currency regimes include fixed, floating, and managed regimes. In a fixed system, a country's currency is pegged to a single foreign currency or a gold standard, with the central bank maintaining the peg through open‑market operations and foreign exchange reserves. A floating system allows the market forces of supply and demand to set exchange rates, with minimal direct intervention from the banking authority. Managed float, sometimes called a "dirty float," blends these approaches: the currency is allowed to float but with occasional interventions by the central bank to correct excessive volatility or to influence the exchange rate in line with macroeconomic objectives. Hybrid arrangements, such as currency boards or sizeable reserve cushions, combine characteristics of these categories to varying degrees.

Beyond classification, several factors influence a country's choice of regime, including economic openness, degree of monetary autonomy, historical experience with inflation, and external pressures. Some nations adopt a basket regime, fixing their currency to a weighted average of several major currencies to reduce dependence on a single partner. The global financial architecture, particularly the role of dominant currencies such as the U.S. dollar and the euro, also shapes exchange regimes. In recent decades, the rise of floating regimes has been accompanied by increasing use of currency swaps, cross‑border capital controls, and coordinated policy actions among major economies.
