Valutarepresentatie

Valutarepresentatie is a term used in financial reporting to describe how currencies are represented in financial statements. It refers to the selection of a presentation currency and the methods used to translate and present foreign currency transactions and balances so that statements are comparable and meaningful to users.

The concept arises in multilingual and multinational reporting where subsidiaries operate in different currencies. The term blends valuta (currency) with representatie (presentation), and is sometimes encountered in discussions of international accounting practice. In formal standards, the related ideas are often expressed through the notions of presentation currency and functional currency.

In practice, valutarepresentatie is implemented through the rules for currency translation found in major accounting frameworks such as IAS 21 The Effects of Changes in Foreign Exchange Rates. Key elements include choosing a presentation currency (often the parent’s currency or a currency of global practice), determining each entity’s functional currency, translating assets and liabilities at closing rates, and translating income and expenses at appropriate averages or rates.
