Valtatiet

Valtatiet, meaning main roads, are a class of roads in Finland designated as national-level routes. They form the backbone of the Finnish road network, connecting major cities, regional hubs, ports and border crossings. The planning, construction and maintenance of valtateiden are the responsibilities of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (Väylävirasto). The network comprises routes with two-digit numbers and many coincide with the European E-road network.

Valtatiet are intended for long-distance and freight traffic and generally meet higher design and safety standards than regional or local roads. They often run as rural divided or multi-lane corridors and are progressively upgraded under national road programs to improve capacity and reliability.
