Valohäikäisy

Valohäikäisy, or glare in English, refers to the visual discomfort or reduced visibility caused by excessively bright light. It can occur in various situations, from direct sunlight to reflections off shiny surfaces. The intensity and source of the light determine the severity of the glare.

There are two main types of glare: direct glare and discomfort glare. Direct glare occurs when a light source is directly in the field of vision, such as looking at the sun or a bright unshielded lamp. Discomfort glare, on the other hand, is less about reduced visibility and more about the subjective feeling of annoyance or discomfort, often caused by uneven lighting.

Glare can have several negative effects. It can cause eye strain, headaches, and temporary vision impairment. In critical situations like driving or operating machinery, glare can significantly reduce visibility, increasing the risk of accidents. For instance, sun glare can make it difficult to see road signs or other vehicles.

Minimizing glare often involves controlling light sources and surfaces. This can be achieved through measures such as using blinds or curtains, installing anti-glare screens on electronic devices, or choosing matte finishes for surfaces that might reflect light. In automotive contexts, polarized sunglasses and windshield visors are common aids. Proper lighting design in indoor environments also aims to prevent glare by using diffused light sources and avoiding direct illumination of work surfaces.
