Valikupõhisus

Valikupõhisus, sometimes translated as choice-based learning or preference-based learning, is an educational approach where students have a significant degree of autonomy in choosing what, how, or when they learn. This contrasts with traditional, more teacher-directed methods. The core idea is that by allowing students to make choices, their engagement, motivation, and ownership of the learning process can be enhanced.

The choices can manifest in various ways. Students might select specific topics within a broader subject area, choose the learning materials they want to use (e.g., reading a book, watching a video, or conducting an experiment), or decide on the methods for demonstrating their understanding (e.g., writing an essay, giving a presentation, or creating a project). The level of choice can also vary, from limited options provided by the teacher to complete freedom within certain parameters.

Proponents of valikupõhisus argue that it fosters a more student-centered learning environment, catering to individual learning styles, interests, and paces. It can also develop critical thinking skills as students learn to evaluate options and make informed decisions. However, implementing this approach requires careful planning by educators to ensure that choices align with learning objectives and that students have the necessary support to make productive selections.
