Valdkondlikkus

Valdkondlikkus, often translated as "sectorality" or "domain-specificity" in English, refers to the concept that knowledge, skills, and cognitive processes are often specialized to particular domains or fields of activity. This means that expertise developed in one area, such as mathematics, does not automatically transfer to another, like learning a new language, without considerable effort and re-learning. The idea challenges the notion of general intelligence that can be applied equally across all tasks and suggests that cognitive abilities are deeply intertwined with the specific contexts and information structures of the domains in which they are practiced.

This principle has significant implications for education and training. It suggests that effective learning requires immersion in a specific domain, including its unique vocabulary, concepts, and problem-solving methods. Simply teaching abstract principles is often insufficient if they cannot be effectively mapped onto the practical application within a particular field.
