VMentry

VMentry is a component in virtualization management systems that represents the entry for a virtual machine within a management store or registry. It provides a consolidated identity and metadata record used by hypervisors, cloud platforms, and orchestration tools to track the VM’s lifecycle, configuration, and state.

A VMentry typically includes a unique identifier, a human-readable name, current status (such as running, paused, or stopped), resource allocations (CPU, memory, and storage), and configuration snapshots that capture the VM’s virtual hardware, boot options, and attached devices. It may also record creation and last-modified timestamps, owner or tenancy information, security profiles, and optional tags for categorization.

In practice, the VMentry acts as the canonical object that other components reference when scheduling actions, performing migrations, taking snapshots, or auditing activity. It exposes a defined API for creating, reading, updating, and deleting entries, as well as event streams or notifications that signal state transitions and policy events.

Within a management stack, VMentry sits in a VM registry or inventory service and interoperates with the scheduler, storage backend, virtual network, and security services. It supports life-cycle workflows, such as boot, suspend, resume, migrate, and terminate, and it enables consistent state views across disparate subsystems.

Security and reliability considerations include access control, encryption of sensitive fields, and integrity checks to prevent tampering. Because the authoritative state may be distributed, systems must handle replication delay and reconciliation to avoid divergence between entries and actual VM states.
