VLANtaga

VLANtaga is a hypothetical tagging scheme proposed to extend conventional VLAN tagging in Ethernet networks. It aims to provide additional contextual information alongside the standard VLAN identifier, enabling more scalable multi-tenant networks and finer-grained policy enforcement without requiring a complete overhaul of existing VLAN isolation.

In the VLANtaga concept, frames carry a secondary context tag that can convey attributes such as tenant or project ID, service level agreements, security domain, or workload type. The context tag is designed to be separate from the primary VLAN ID so that policy decisions can be made at different points in the network, while preserving backward-compatible behavior for devices that do not recognize the extra tag.

Implementation concepts for VLANtaga include defining an auxiliary tag field in the data path or introducing a metadata header used by switches and routers capable of path-aware processing. The design emphasizes interoperability by ensuring legacy devices ignore the context tag when unrecognized, while capable devices parse and apply policies based on the additional information.

Adoption and status: VLANtaga remains a theoretical construct discussed in academic literature and industry forums rather than an industry standard. It is used in exploratory lab environments and simulations to study concepts such as micro-segmentation, tenant isolation, and dynamic policy enforcement across diverse equipment. Real-world deployment would require consensus on a standard, cross-vendor support, and careful considerations of hardware changes and security implications.
