VESAstandard

VESAStandard refers to the collection of standards published by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA), a global nonprofit organization that develops and maintains specifications for display interfaces, mounting systems, and related technologies. Founded in 1989 by major electronics manufacturers, VESA coordinates industry efforts to promote interoperability among monitors, graphics cards, and other display devices.

The scope of VESA standards covers both how displays connect to hosts and how displays are physically installed. Notable areas include DisplayPort (DP), a high-bandwidth digital interface for video and audio between computers and monitors. DisplayPort specifications have evolved through multiple revisions, introducing features such as multi-stream transport and, in dual-mode configurations (DP++), compatibility with HDMI and DVI outputs. Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) is used to connect internal laptop and mobile panels to system-on-chip graphics.

VESA also maintains the Mounting Interface Standard (MIS) for flat-panel displays, which defines standardized hole patterns used by stands, arms, and wall mounts. Common MIS patterns include 75x75 mm, 100x100 mm, 200x200 mm, and 400x400 mm, with larger configurations used on professional and cinema displays. In addition, VESA publishes data-related standards such as EDID (Extended Display Identification Data), which allows a display to communicate its capabilities to a video source, and historical efforts like VESA BIOS Extensions (VBE), which supported BIOS-level access to video modes.

Compliance and certification programs enable products to be labeled as VESA Certified, indicating conformance to a specific standard. These programs help manufacturers demonstrate interoperability and guide buyers in selecting compatible components. VESA standards continue to evolve to address emerging display technologies, including higher resolutions, refresh rates, and HDR, and are publicly accessible through VESA’s publications.
