V2VV2I

V2VV2I is a unified vehicle communication framework designed to coordinate data exchange between moving vehicles and between vehicles and roadside infrastructure. The acronym denotes the integration of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications into a single, interoperable stack intended for intelligent transport systems.

Developed in response to the growing need for cross-domain data sharing in smart cities, V2VV2I enables real-time safety messages, traffic condition updates, and automated driving assistance to be distributed through a common protocol and addressing scheme. It supports mixed connectivity options, including DSRC and cellular V2X (C-V2X), and is designed to operate over evolving 5G networks.

The framework uses a layered approach with a common network layer that handles addressing, routing, and quality-of-service; a data plane that carries application messages; and a security layer for authentication and encryption. It defines a set of standard message types for safety, mobility, and application data, with optional extensions for privacy-preserving data sharing.

V2VV2I features context-aware routing, allowing messages to be relayed via other vehicles or road-side units to reach destinations with minimal latency. It supports dynamic path selection, prioritizing critical safety broadcasts over infotainment data during congestion.

While V2VV2I is described in industry white papers and research pilots, it is not yet a formal international standard, though it draws on established V2X frameworks such as SAE J2945/J2735 and 3GPP specifications for C-V2X. Pilot deployments are occurring in several cities to study interoperability and security.
