Võistlussüsteeme refers to the framework or structure within which competitions are organized and managed. These systems dictate how participants are matched, how progress is tracked, and how winners are determined. Various types of võistlussüsteeme exist, each suited for different competitive contexts and participant numbers.

A common type is the knockout system, also known as a single-elimination tournament. In this format, a participant is eliminated after a single loss, and winners advance to the next round. This system is efficient for large numbers of participants and quickly identifies a single champion. However, it offers limited opportunities for participants who are eliminated early.

Another prevalent system is the round-robin tournament. Here, each participant competes against every other participant. This method ensures that all participants have multiple matches, providing a more comprehensive evaluation of skill. It is often used in leagues and championship series where consistency over a longer period is important. However, round-robin tournaments can be time-consuming, especially with a large number of competitors.

Combinations of these systems are also used. For instance, a double-elimination tournament allows participants to remain in the competition even after one loss, provided they win in the losers' bracket. Swiss-system tournaments, often seen in chess and esports, aim to pair participants with similar win-loss records, creating competitive matches without requiring every participant to play every other participant.
