Værnes

Værnes is a district and a former municipality located in Trøndelag county, Norway. Historically, it was a significant area, known for its agricultural lands and strategic position. The name "Værnes" itself is believed to derive from Old Norse and relates to a "place of landing" or "shore."

The municipality of Værnes was established in 1891 when it was separated from the larger municipality of Stjørdal. It encompassed a considerable area, including the town of Stjørdalshalsen, which is now the administrative center of the current Stjørdal municipality. Værnes was a relatively short-lived administrative entity, as it was merged back into Stjørdal in 1962.

Today, the name Værnes is most commonly associated with the Værnes Air Station, a Royal Norwegian Air Force base. This air station is a crucial military installation and also serves as Trondheim Airport, Værnes (TRD), handling significant domestic and international air traffic. The presence of the airport has made Værnes a key transportation hub for the region. The area also retains its agricultural character in many parts, with farms contributing to the local landscape and economy. While no longer an independent municipality, Værnes remains a recognizable geographical and historical designation within Stjørdal.
