Växellok

Växellok, a Swedish term, refers to a shunting locomotive. These are specialized railway engines designed for the task of moving railway cars around a depot, yard, or industrial complex. Unlike mainline locomotives that travel long distances, växellok are built for low speeds and high tractive effort, enabling them to push and pull heavy loads with precision. Their typical operation involves assembling and disassembling trains, delivering and collecting wagons from sidings, and generally managing the intricate movements of rolling stock within a confined area.

Växellok can be powered by various means, including diesel engines, electric power from overhead lines or a third rail, or historically, steam. Diesel-hydraulically and diesel-electrically powered växellok are common due to their flexibility and lack of reliance on fixed infrastructure. Electric växellok are often found in large electrified yards where continuous operation is required, as they offer lower running costs and zero emissions within the yard itself.

They often feature a compact design, sometimes with a central cab or rotating cabs to improve sightlines in complex track layouts.
