Värinhallinta, or color management, is a set of procedures and technologies designed to ensure that colors appear consistent across different devices and media. The goal of color management is to achieve a predictable and accurate reproduction of color from its initial capture to its final output. This involves understanding the color gamuts of various devices such as monitors, scanners, printers, and cameras.

The process typically begins with defining a device's color space, which describes the range of colors it can produce or capture. Color profiles, often in the International Color Consortium (ICC) format, are used to characterize these color spaces. When an image is created or captured, it is usually associated with a specific color profile.

When a color needs to be displayed or printed on a different device with a different color space, a process called color transformation occurs. This transformation uses a device-independent color space, like CIELAB or XYZ, as an intermediary to convert colors accurately. This ensures that what you see on your screen is as close as possible to what will be printed, or vice versa.

Effective color management is crucial in fields such as graphic design, photography, printing, and digital imaging where color accuracy is paramount. It helps avoid discrepancies in color appearance and ensures that the intended visual message is conveyed without distortion. Without proper color management, variations in color reproduction can lead to dissatisfaction and wasted resources.
