Väckarklockan

Väckarklockan (Swedish for "the alarm clock") is a device or application used to alert a person at a predetermined time, most commonly to awaken them from sleep. Historically, mechanical alarm clocks with springs and a striking bell were widespread from the 19th century onward; these typically included a separate alarm mechanism that engaged a hammer against a bell or gong.

During the 20th century electric alarm clocks became common, offering greater accuracy and additional features such as radio alarms and snooze functions. From the late 20th and early 21st centuries, digital displays, programmable settings and the integration of alarms into multifunctional devices—most notably mobile phones—have largely supplanted standalone units in many households. Specialized forms include light-based "sunrise" alarms intended to ease waking by simulating dawn, and alarms designed for hearing-impaired users that use vibration or visual signals.

Beyond their practical role, väckarklockor appear as symbols in literature, film and everyday speech, often representing time, urgency or the transition between sleep and wakefulness. In Swedish usage, the term is also found in idioms and everyday expressions related to schedules and punctuality. Contemporary discussion of alarm clocks touches on health and sleep research, with attention to how abrupt awakenings and repeated snoozing can affect sleep quality and circadian rhythms.
