Uverifiserbare

Uverifiserbare is a Norwegian adjective describing information, claims, or propositions that cannot be confirmed or disproven with available evidence, observation, or reproducible methods. The term is formed from the prefix u- (negation) and -bar (capable of), attached to verifisere, meaning to verify. The related noun uverifiserbarhet denotes the state or quality of being unverifiable.

In philosophy and science, unverifiable statements are often discussed in relation to verifiability and falsifiability. Verifiability concerns whether a claim can be confirmed by evidence, while falsifiability (as emphasized by Karl Popper) concerns whether a claim can be logically refuted by potential observations. Unverifiability, in this sense, indicates that no feasible test or observation can determine the truth or falsehood of the claim under consideration. Some domains, such as metaphysics, certain historical interpretations, or some paranormal claims, are described as unverifiable given current methods or data.

Critiques of strict verifiability criteria argue that the label unverifiable can obscure potentially meaningful discourse. They note that many legitimate inquiries—ethical debates, historical analysis, and theory-building in some sciences—rely on inference, coherence, or methodological norms rather than direct empirical verification alone. Nonetheless, labeling a claim as unverifiable serves as a diagnostic about the limits of evidence and the current state of inquiry.
