Utmarksbruk

Utmarksbruk is a term used in Norway and other Nordic contexts to describe the use and management of utmark, the land outside cultivated fields and settlements. Utmark refers to forests, mountains, moorland, shorelines and other uncultivated or non-agricultural areas that are not part of regular farmland. Utmarksbruk encompasses a broad range of activities, including grazing of livestock on common or summer pasture, forestry operations, hunting and fishing, berry and mushroom picking, and outdoor recreation and tourism. It can also involve infrastructure development in these areas, such as roads, power lines, or wind energy facilities.

In Norway, public access rights allow people to use utmark for recreational and non-destructive purposes, within certain restrictions designed to protect nature and local livelihoods. For Indigenous and local communities, particularly Sámi reindeer herding in higher-latitude utmark areas, traditional livelihoods influence and are influenced by utmarksbruk.
