Utgivningsort is a bibliographic term used to indicate the city or locality where a publication was issued. It is a standard element in library catalogs and metadata and helps identify editions and publishing histories. In Swedish bibliographic practice, utgivningsort is closely linked to the publisher (utgivare) and the date of publication. Some older catalogs use the term förlagsort; in modern Swedish catalogs utgivningsort is preferred, although both may appear in records for older editions or retro-converted data.

In standard library schemas, utgivningsort is encoded in fields that carry publication information, most commonly in MARC records as 260$a or 264$a with 260$c or 264$c indicating the date. The place can be a city and country, such as Stockholm, Sverige; New York, USA. For works published in multiple locales, catalogs may list more than one utgivningsort or link separate records for each edition.

Limitations and variations occur: for many digital resources or non-traditional formats, the imprint may be missing or uncertain; some items include multiple publishers in different languages, giving multiple places of publication. Contemporary cataloging under RDA emphasizes the field 264 with subfield a for place of publication, while older records may retain 260 fields.

In practice, utgivningsort helps users distinguish editions, locate copies in libraries, and understand the publication history of a work. It should be interpreted together with the publisher and date to identify the exact edition.
