Uraniumbearing

Uraniumbearing refers to rocks, minerals, or commodities that contain uranium. In geological terms, material described as uranium-bearing may host uranium in a variety of mineral forms, including uraninite (pitchblende, UO2), coffinite (USiO4(OH)4), and a range of secondary minerals such as autunite, torbernite, carnotite, and uranophane. The uranium content is typically reported as weight percent U or as uranium oxide equivalents (U3O8). The presence of uranium does not by itself indicate an economic deposit; ore grade and tonnage determine economic viability.

Uranium-bearing minerals occur in several geological settings. Primary ore forms can develop in granitic and volcanic rocks. Significant deposits are found in sedimentary basins, especially sandstone-hosted roll-front deposits. Calcrete-hosted uranium occurs in arid regions, and unconformity-type deposits are well known in shield and craton settings. The mineralogy and oxidation state influence how uranium behaves during weathering and extraction.

Exploration and evaluation rely on radiometric surveys and gamma-ray logging to identify anomalies, followed by geochemical sampling and drilling to determine grade and tonnage. When mined and processed, uranium-bearing ore is converted into uranium concentrates, commonly described as yellowcake (U3O8), which then enters refining and fabrication streams depending on end-use.

Safety and regulation are central considerations, as uranium-bearing materials are radioactive. Handling, environmental protection, waste management, and compliance with national and international guidelines govern activities from exploration through milling.
