Unconformitytype is a term used in geology to describe a missing section of rock layers in the geologic record. This break in the sequence of rock strata represents a period of time during which either erosion removed previously deposited rock, or deposition never occurred. Unconformities are therefore surfaces that separate younger strata from older strata, where the older strata have been eroded or are missing.

There are four main types of unconformities. A disconformity is an unconformity where the strata on either side are parallel, but there is a visible surface of erosion. A nonconformity occurs when sedimentary rocks are deposited on top of older igneous or metamorphic rocks. An angular unconformity is characterized by sedimentary layers that are tilted or folded and then eroded before younger, parallel sedimentary layers are deposited on top. Finally, a paraconformity is a surface of erosion or non-deposition separating parallel sedimentary layers where there is no obvious erosional surface but a significant gap in time is inferred.

Unconformities are important because they represent significant periods of geologic time that are not recorded in the rock record. They can indicate periods of uplift and erosion, or periods of non-deposition. Studying unconformities helps geologists to understand the history of the Earth, including past environments, tectonic events, and sea-level changes. The recognition of unconformities is crucial for accurate geological mapping and for understanding the stratigraphy and relative ages of rock formations.
