Uppsägningsdatum

Uppsägningsdatum is a Swedish term that refers to the date on which a notice of termination is given in connection with an employment relationship, or the date on which a termination becomes effective. It is closely tied to uppsägningstid, the notice period that applies after the notice of termination is issued.

In practice, the uppsägningsdatum often marks the start of the notice period. During this period the employee typically continues to work under the existing terms, and the employer continues to fulfil its obligations until the period ends. The employment relationship ends on the date when the notice period expires, which is usually specified in the employment contract, collective agreement, or applicable law. Depending on circumstances, the actual end date may be the same as or later than the date the resignation or termination is communicated.

Who initiates matters: an employee can resign by submitting a written resignation with an indicated uppsägningsdatum, while an employer can terminate an employee by issuing a termination notice with an effective date. The key point is that the end date is generally the end of the notice period rather than simply the date the notice is given.

Practical considerations include ensuring the uppsägningsdatum is stated in writing to avoid disputes, and recognizing that the length of uppsägningstid varies by contract, tenure, and any relevant collective agreements.
