Uppgreftrir

Uppgreftrir is a traditional cultural practice in the fictional region of Eldheim, described as a system for recording communal memory and genealogies. The term appears in the fictional encyclopedia of Eldheim and is used by scholars within that imagined world to discuss memory, law, and identity.

Practice involves the inscription of genealogical and historical records on wooden tablets during multi-day gatherings known as the Uppgreftrir Assembly. Scribes prepare tablets (called bräskr), carve the entries, and apply ink runes; storytellers deliver oral histories; witnesses validate entries; and the resulting records are stored in a public archive for future reference.

Materials commonly used include alder wood for tablets, ink and chisels, and a script called Hovrun, a fictional writing system. Entries are sealed with wax and transported to communal archive houses where they are maintained and periodically consulted by community members.

History within the fiction traces Uppgreftrir to medieval Eldheim, with a revival in the late 15th century and ongoing ceremonial use in the present fictional timeline. Variants exist: coastal communities tend to use driftwood tablets, while inland communities favor more permanent stone markers. Script variants also appear across different settlements.
