Uppgiftsval, or "task selection," refers to the process by which students in Swedish schools are given the opportunity to choose which academic subjects or courses they will study during their upper secondary education (gymnasieskola). This system is a key component of Sweden’s educational framework, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests, career aspirations, and strengths.

The concept of uppgiftsval is most prominently associated with the final two years of compulsory schooling, known as gymnasiet, where students typically select between different programs (programinriktningar) that combine core subjects with specialized electives. For example, a student interested in technology might choose a natural science program, while one inclined toward business might opt for an economics program. Within these programs, students further refine their choices by selecting specific courses, often referred to as "valbar kurs" (elective courses), which complement their main focus.

Uppgiftsval is designed to promote student engagement and motivation by aligning education with individual goals. It also reflects Sweden’s emphasis on lifelong learning and adaptability, preparing students for diverse career paths. However, the system requires careful planning, as course selections can impact university admissions and future employment opportunities. Schools often provide guidance to help students make informed decisions based on their abilities and future plans.

Critics of uppgiftsval argue that the pressure to choose the "right" courses can lead to stress, particularly for students unsure about their career paths.
