Untreatable is a term used in medicine and related fields to describe a condition for which no effective treatment exists that can cure, halt progression, or meaningfully improve symptoms. It can apply to diseases, injuries, infections, or symptom clusters. The term is context-dependent and may reflect the current state of knowledge, technology, and available resources. Because medical advances can create new therapies, conditions once deemed untreatable may become treatable over time.

Ethical considerations accompany the concept of untreatable circumstances, including patient autonomy, informed consent, resource allocation, and expectations about prognosis. The term is sometimes criticized for implying finality and lack of hope; some scholars advocate using more nuanced language such as prognosis, futility, or potential for emerging therapies.
