UnterkieferPrämolaren

UnterkieferPrämolaren is a German term referring to the premolar teeth located in the lower jaw, also known as the mandible. These teeth are situated between the canine teeth and the molar teeth. In humans, there are typically two premolars on each side of the lower jaw, designated as the first and second lower premolars, or sometimes as the lower premolars 3 and 4, depending on the numbering system used.

The primary function of lower premolars is to assist in the chewing process. They have a broad, relatively flat occlusal surface with one or two cusps, which helps in grinding and tearing food. The first lower premolar is generally smaller than the second lower premolar. They play a crucial role in the transition between the more pointed canine teeth used for tearing and the broader molars designed for grinding.

Developmentally, the lower premolars form from tooth buds and erupt into the oral cavity after the deciduous (baby) teeth have been shed, typically during late childhood or early adolescence. Their shape and position are important for the overall occlusion and function of the mandible. Like other teeth, they are susceptible to decay and periodontal disease if proper oral hygiene is not maintained.
