This approach contrasts with traditional overhead sprinklers that apply water to the foliage and surface of the soil. The primary goal is to improve water efficiency by minimizing evaporation and runoff, thereby delivering water precisely where it is needed.

These systems typically consist of a network of pipes or tubing laid beneath the soil surface. Emitters, which can be drippers, porous pipes, or specialized nozzles, are integrated into the tubing at calculated intervals. Water is delivered under low pressure, allowing it to seep out slowly and directly onto the plant roots. This gradual application also prevents soil compaction and erosion.
