Unterarmsupination

Unterarmsupination is a process in which the forearm, distal (lower) end, is in a supinated position in relation to the upper arm. It is an alternative to forearm pronation or supination seen in bipolar forearms, where the distal radius and ulna articulate with each other. In cases where this articulation position deviates from the typical flexion or pronation, it may be termed Unterarmsupination.

The process is absorbed in the elbow joint and the muscles associated with the forearm determine its application. Mainly supported by the biceps and brachialis, this movement involves a large amount of coordination and motor control from the central nervous system. Unterarmsupination is evident in many activities that require detailed hand movement, such as sports involving a bat or similar tools.

In surgeries of the distal forearm, where the reduction of the radius and ulna are deviated, the process of Unterarmsupination needs to be restored in order to normalize blood circulation to the area. In cases where the Unterarmsupination position is not properly restored, various symptoms such as a non-perfect rotation of the palm of the hand, toward the lateral side, could be potentially observed in the clinical examination.

Unterarmsupination has its own specificity but shares many similarities with normal forearm supination and pronation. The process is an important element of anatomy in people that, after an injury, exhibit abnormal positions in the articulation and the recovery process. It highlights the superior physiology of inter-related body parts that allows adaptive movement despite specific damage or intersection damage to the physical system.
