Unspayed

Unspayed refers to a female animal that has not undergone the surgical procedure known as spaying. Spaying, also called ovariohysterectomy or ovariectomy, involves the removal of the ovaries and/or uterus. Therefore, an unspayed female animal still possesses these reproductive organs and is capable of reproduction.

In domesticated animals, particularly cats and dogs, spaying is a common veterinary procedure. It is often recommended for several reasons, including population control to prevent unwanted litters, reducing the risk of certain reproductive cancers and infections, and mitigating behaviors associated with heat cycles such as yowling or roaming.

An unspayed female will experience estrus cycles, commonly referred to as being in heat. During these periods, they become fertile and may attract intact males. The signs of heat can vary between species but often include behavioral changes like increased vocalization, restlessness, and urine marking. Unspayed animals are also at a higher risk for pyometra, a serious uterine infection, and mammary tumors, particularly if they are not spayed at a young age. The decision to spay an animal is typically made in consultation with a veterinarian, who can discuss the benefits and risks based on the individual animal's health and circumstances.
