Unmotorized

Unmotorized is an adjective describing equipment, vehicles, or systems that operate without a motor or engine. It is used to distinguish from motorized devices and often includes human-powered, wind-powered, animal-powered, or passively powered mechanisms. In everyday language, unmotorized travel or tools rely on manual effort or natural forces rather than mechanical propulsion.

In transportation and recreation, common unmotorized modes include walking, cycling, skateboarding, rowed or paddled boats, and sailing without auxiliary engines. Non-powered options also encompass hand-pulled carts, pack animals, and other devices moved by human or animal effort.

Policy and planning research emphasizes unmotorized transport for its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower pollution, improve public health, and ease congestion. Urban design often supports unmotorized modes through sidewalks, protected bike lanes, pedestrian zones, and safe crossings.

Limitations and challenges include slower travel speeds, weather dependence, and limited load or range. Safety concerns arise when unmotorized users share space with motorized traffic; infrastructure and regulations must address visibility, right-of-way, and maintenance of facilities such as bike paths and footways.

Terminology notes: unmotorized is sometimes used interchangeably with non-motorized. The choice of term can vary by region and discipline; some sources prefer non-motorized to emphasize absence of a motor rather than absence of power.
