Unixsystemer refer to a family of operating systems historically derived from or inspired by the original Unix developed at Bell Labs in the late 1960s. They are united by design principles that emphasize multitasking, multiuser operation, portability, and a modular structure in which simple utilities can be combined to perform complex tasks in shells and scripts.

Architecturally, Unixsystemer typically separate a kernel responsible for resource management from a user environment that provides commands, libraries, and shells. Core features include a hierarchical file system, pipes and redirection, robust permissions, process management, and a standard set of development tools. Over time, POSIX emerged as a common baseline to improve portability across implementations.

Historically, Unix originated at Bell Labs and spawned several major branches. BSD descendants include FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD; System V variants include Solaris (formerly SunOS), AIX, and HP-UX. The “Unix wars” in the 1980s and 1990s catalyzed a division between AT&T/Bell Labs lineage and System V–based systems. Linux, while not Unix proper, is Unix‑like and widely used as a compatible alternative. macOS combines a Unix‑like userland with the XNU kernel and is formally Unix‑compliant.

Today, Unixsystemer encompass a broad ecosystem: BSD variants, proprietary Unix from vendors, and POSIX‑compliant platforms such as macOS and Linux. They continue to influence system administration, scripting practices, and software development, and the Unix philosophy—small, interoperable tools and plain-text interfaces—remains a guiding principle in many environments.
