Universität is a higher education and research institution that offers degree programs across multiple disciplines and conducts scholarly research. Universities typically provide undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs, awarding bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. They are defined by the integration of teaching and research, organized into faculties or departments, and supported by academic staff and researchers.

Historically, universities arose in medieval Europe as centers of advanced learning, with early examples in Bologna, Paris, and Oxford. In German-speaking regions, the modern university tradition developed from the Middle Ages into the 19th century, shaping structures such as central administrations, faculties, and research-oriented missions that persist in many countries today.

Most universities are governed by a rector or president, a senate or academic council, and a central administration, with faculties and institutes composing the academic structure. They pursue research agendas across disciplines, often through doctoral programs, graduate schools, and cross-disciplinary centers.

Universitäten differ from some other higher education institutions, such as Fachhochschulen (universities of applied sciences), which focus more on applied teaching and professional preparation and typically emphasize industry cooperation and fewer research-oriented degrees. Some universities are specialized (technical, medical, or agricultural), while others remain broad-based research universities.

Funding and governance vary by country and institution; most receive public funding and may charge tuition or student fees, especially for international students. Universities participate in international collaboration and exchange programs, and they often operate across multiple campuses or partner networks to advance teaching, research, and innovation.
