Undirþræðir
Undirþræðir, meaning "undertow" in Icelandic, refers to a specific type of submerged current found in the ocean. Unlike surface currents that are driven by wind or large-scale oceanographic forces, undertows are typically localized phenomena. They are often created by the backwash of waves hitting a shore, where the water that has been pushed onto the beach by a wave flows back out to sea beneath the incoming waves. This creates a strong, often narrow, downward and seaward pull.
Undertows can be particularly dangerous for swimmers as they can rapidly pull individuals away from the shore.
