Understasjoner, or substations, are fixed facilities in an electrical power system where voltage is transformed, switched, and controlled to connect generation, transmission, and distribution networks. They enable the efficient transfer of electrical energy from producers to consumers while maintaining voltage within safe limits and allowing fault isolation and system protection.

The main components of a substation include transformers to adjust voltage levels, switchgear such as circuit breakers and disconnectors to connect or isolate circuits, and busbars to carry multiple circuits. Protection relays, control equipment, and measurement devices are essential for monitoring, automation, and safety. Substations may also include surge protection, grounding, and communication systems that enable remote supervision and integration with larger grid control centers.

Substations come in several types. Transmission substations link high-voltage transmission lines and may step voltage up or down for interconnection and network stability. Distribution substations take the higher voltage from transmission lines and lower it for delivery to homes and businesses. Renewable-collection or conversion substations gather power from wind, solar, or other sources and raise it to transmission levels for transport. Substations can be outdoor or indoor and may use air-insulated or gas-insulated designs, depending on space, cost, and reliability considerations.

Operation and maintenance of substations are typically supported by remote monitoring and automated protection schemes (often via SCADA), with regular testing and preventive maintenance. Safety considerations are paramount due to high voltages, energized equipment, and potential environmental impacts, particularly in oil-filled transformers or outdoor facilities.

Substations are a fundamental element of the electrical grid, enabling voltage control, fault management, load balancing, and the integration of new generation while supporting reliability and resilience.
