Undersensitivity

Undersensitivity refers to a reduced or diminished response to sensory stimuli. This means an individual may not perceive certain sensations as strongly as others, or they may require a higher intensity of stimulation to elicit a response. It is a characteristic that can manifest across various sensory modalities, including touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing, and proprioception (the sense of body position).

In tactile undersensitivity, a person might not notice light touches, pain, or temperature changes. For auditory undersensitivity, individuals may not hear quiet sounds or may have difficulty distinguishing speech in noisy environments. Visual undersensitivity could involve a slower reaction to visual cues or a need for brighter lighting.

Undersensitivity is often associated with certain neurological conditions or developmental differences, such as autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing disorder, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, it can also be a temporary state due to fatigue or illness. It is important to distinguish undersensitivity from other sensory processing differences, like hypersensitivity, which involves an over-reactive response to stimuli. Understanding undersensitivity is crucial for implementing appropriate support strategies and accommodations to help individuals navigate their environment effectively.
