Umbótastríði

Umbótastríði, Icelandic for "reform war," refers to a period of significant political and social upheaval in Iceland that began in the early 20th century. This era was characterized by a strong movement advocating for greater autonomy and independence from Danish rule. The Icelandic people sought to re-establish their own national institutions and gain full control over their affairs, which had been largely governed by Denmark since the Kalmar Union.

Key demands of the reform movement included the establishment of a national bank, the development of a national parliament with legislative power, and the gradual separation from Denmark. Figures like Jón Sigurðsson, though active earlier, remained a powerful symbol for the reformists, inspiring a generation to pursue these goals.
