Ultrazooms

Ultrazooms, also known as superzoom lenses, are camera lenses designed with an exceptionally wide focal length range, allowing for versatile shooting from wide-angle to extreme telephoto perspectives within a single lens. These lenses are popular among photographers who seek convenience and adaptability without changing lenses, especially for travel, wildlife, and sports photography.

Typically characterized by their high zoom ratios—often exceeding 10x or even 20x—they feature variable focal lengths that can span from around 18mm to 200mm or more. This extensive range enables users to capture various subjects, from expansive landscapes to distant wildlife, with minimal lens changes.

Ultrazoom lenses are available for both digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) and mirrorless camera systems, and they are also common in compact and bridge cameras. They usually incorporate image stabilization technology to counteract camera shake, which becomes more critical at telephoto focal lengths. Due to their design, ultrazooms tend to be larger and heavier than standard lenses, and they may exhibit optical compromises such as decreased sharpness or increased distortion at certain focal lengths, although advancements in lens technology have mitigated some of these issues.
