Ultrahigh molecular weight polymers are polymers whose chains are exceptionally long, resulting in average molecular weights typically exceeding about one million grams per mole. The extreme chain length produces a high degree of chain entanglement, which gives these materials outstanding toughness, abrasion resistance, and impact strength, but also makes melt and solution processing very difficult due to extremely high viscosities.

The best-known example is ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). UHMWPE offers very low friction and excellent wear resistance, properties that make it a common bearing surface in medical joint implants and various industrial wear parts. It can be fabricated into molded parts, films, and especially fibers. UHMWPE fibers are produced by specialized methods such as gel spinning followed by drawing, which align polymer chains and dramatically increase tensile strength.

Processing ultrahigh molecular weight polymers poses notable challenges. Conventional melt processing is often impractical because of the high viscosity and the tendency for chain scission under heat. Specialized techniques, including gel spinning, ram extrusion, and compression molding, are employed. Post-processing steps such as drawing and annealing are used to enhance mechanical properties in fibers and molded components.

Applications of ultrahigh molecular weight polymers center on wear resistance and toughness. UHMWPE is widely used for orthopedic bearing surfaces, industrial wear parts, seals, and protective fibers. The high performance comes with higher material costs and more demanding processing requirements. Research continues to expand processing methods and to tailor properties for specific end-uses.
